How this calculator works
We add up every expense you enter to get the total trip cost, then divide that total evenly by the number of travelers to find each person's fair share — when the total doesn't divide evenly to the cent, the leftover cent goes to the first traveler(s) listed, so every number on screen adds up exactly. Comparing what someone actually paid against their fair share gives their net balance — a positive number means the group owes them, a negative number means they owe the group. For the settlement suggestion, we match whoever's owed the most against whoever owes the most and repeat until every balance reaches zero: a small, clear set of payments, worked out in the open.
