How this is calculated: your total rent is split according to each roommate's share — equal, or by room size. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent; any leftover cents from rounding are spread one cent at a time across the group, so the total always adds up to your exact rent — never a cent over or under.
When does splitting by room size make more sense?
An equal split works well when the rooms in your home are roughly the same size and none of them has an obvious advantage, like a private bathroom or a walk-in closet. Once one room is noticeably bigger, brighter, or comes with an extra perk, splitting proportionally to each room's share of the total space is usually the fairer call — and it heads off the "why am I paying the same for the smaller room?" conversation before it starts.
Worked example: a $1,800 monthly rent, three rooms sized 50%, 30%, and 20% of the shared space.
